Frequently Asked Questions

  • Art therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy both combine psychotherapy and creative art making or expression in sessions. This may look like doodling or writing while you’re sharing something difficult. This may also look like painting and creating patterns that make you feel calm or this may also look like an art project that can help you further process and dive into deeper meanings you may not know exist. This looks like whatever you want it to look like - this is your session and everyone is unique.

  • You do not need to be an artist to participate in art or expressive arts therapy! We focus on the process, not so much on the final product. Tapping into creativity does not necessarily mean creating visual arts either - it can also mean writing, mapping and using different ways to express and share your story.

  • Everybody is different and has different comfort levels when it comes to materials and modalities. I offer a wide range of materials in in-person sessions that may range from pencil crayons and markers to things like paint, plasticine, clay, collage, Lego, yarn and natural materials. For individuals who want to dip into their expressive side, we may engage in dance, movement, music and play. You will never be forced to use any modality or material that makes you feel uncomfortable.

  • You do not need to create in session if you do not want to! If you feel comfortable with expressing yourself through talking - that is completely okay too! Not everyone utilizes the arts and that’s okay.

  • Sessions are 50 minutes in length

  • We would begin by scheduling a free consultation to discuss your goals of therapy, answer any questions you may have and to see whether I could be a good fit for you.

If you feel like we could be a good fit, you may choose to schedule an intake session. An intake session is 50 minutes in length where I will ask you some questions and discuss your goals of therapy in detail. We will also go over the ‘housekeeping’ stuff, such as confidentiality, safety and limits. The intake session assists me in getting a ‘bigger picture’ so that I can formulate a plan to best support you.

After that, you may choose to schedule sessions as needed. These sessions will be goal oriented but will also allow for you to show up as you are in session and process whatever you need in that moment.

Please feel free to reach out if you have more questions regarding the process.
