What is Art Therapy & Expressive Arts Therapy?

Art Therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy combine psychotherapy and the creative process in exploring difficult and overwhelming thoughts and emotions. Not only can the act of creating be very regulating and therapeutic, but it is also a great way to encourage mindfulness and can support somatic awareness when working with trauma. The arts are a great way to encourage self-understanding, self-discovery and empowerment.

The creative therapies offer a wide range of modalities that can include working with paints, plasticine, clay, movement, writing and music..basically any way an individual would like to express themselves! The arts offer a great way for individuals to externalize and process difficult conversations from a safe distance and to help individuals express themselves when language is a barrier or when words are not enough.

Expressive art therapy integrates all of the arts in a safe, non-judgmental setting to facilitate personal growth and healing. To use the arts expressively means going into our inner realms to discover feelings and to express them through visual art, movement, sound, writing or drama. This process fosters release, self-understanding, insight and awakens creativity and transpersonal states of consciousness.
